Dieting today is as natural for some as breathing, and it seems as though everyone is on a diet. There are low carb diets, low fat diets, the Mediterranean diet, the Paleo diet, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Jenny Craig – there is a seemingly never-ending list, as there is always a new craze on the market for people looking for the next “quick fix.” Have you ever really stopped to think about diets, and why you, yourself, or someone you know is always on one? Think about this, though – If diets really worked, then not many people would be on a diet. A person wanting to lose weight would go on a diet, lose weight and that would be the end of it! But why isn’t it that easy? The diet industry makes billions of dollars trying to convince us that one of their “fool-proof” methods for weight loss is the answer we’ve been waiting for. The truth is that the only real answer to weight loss is one that we don’t like, so we get suckered into fad diets and schemes. Weight loss and lasting transformation is about adopting a healthy lifestyle. It’s about finding healthy foods that you enjoy eating, and finding some sort of movement that you will continue to do again and again. It’s in finding balance and moderation. You have to know yourself to win the “battle of the bulge.” If you can’t keep a cake in your house without binging on it, go out with friends and enjoy a slice and then move on. It’s about knowing when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full. It’s about knowing when you’re eating due to stress and fatigue, and then coming up with a game plan to combat it. How to eat and live a healthy life style comes in all shapes and sizes – just like we do. As Alexandra Sifferlin mentioned in the article “The Weight Loss Trap: Why Your Diet Isn’t Working,” extreme diets and exercise programs will produce results, but not lasting results. And they are extremely hard on both your body and your metabolism. When you lose weight your body’s resting metabolic rate slows down and it doesn’t speed back up. Even if you end up gaining some of the weight back, your metabolic rate stays at the lowered rate, meaning that it will take even more to lose the weight again. So when you think about what you are really doing to your body when you diet, you realize that it just isn’t worth it. Instead, find out what foods make you feel good, what makes you come alive and what gives you energy, and then eat that. Love your body, and it’ll love you right back!
